MetaMask vs rabby wallet security comparison

Two wallets dominate the browser extension space. Both hold your keys. Both connect to dApps. But they approach security in fundamentally different ways.

This comparison focuses on the security workflow differences that matter most. Not features. Not UI preferences. Security posture.

Pre-Transaction Simulation

Rabby simulates every transaction before you sign. It runs the transaction against the current chain state and shows you exactly what will happen. You see the token you will send, the amount, the recipient. More importantly, you see what you will receive on the other side.

MetaMask does not do this. It shows you the raw transaction data: gas limits, hex-encoded function calls. You approve without seeing the outcome. Experienced users can decode the data manually. Most users cannot.

The difference matters most with malicious dApps. A swap interface might promise 1,000 USDC, while the underlying transaction sends 10 USDC and approves a drainer contract. Rabby would show the real outcome before you sign. MetaMask would not.

Dangerous Signature Warnings

The eth_sign method is dangerous: it allows a dApp to request a signature over arbitrary data, and an attacker can use this to drain your wallet without a transaction. Both wallets warn about this.

MetaMask shows a red warning screen for eth_sign requests and tells you this is unsafe, but it still lets you proceed. The warning is text-heavy. Many users skim it and approve.

Rabby blocks eth_sign entirely by default. You cannot approve it without manually enabling it in advanced settings. The friction is intentional. It makes the dangerous path harder to take.

The permit signature is a different risk. It allows a dApp to spend your tokens after you sign a message. MetaMask treats this like a normal message signature, with no special warning and no context about what you are approving.

Rabby intercepts permit signatures, decodes them, and shows you which token is being approved, how much, and to which contract. It also warns you if the spender contract looks suspicious. This is where the simulation engine matters most.

Recovery and key management

MetaMask gives you a 12-word seed phrase. It supports multiple accounts derived from that phrase. You can export private keys individually. The recovery process is straightforward but manual.

Rabby uses the same BIP-39 standard: same 12-word seeds, same account derivation. But Rabby also supports importing MetaMask vaults directly, so you do not need to re-enter your seed phrase if you are migrating.

Neither wallet stores your private keys on their servers. Both are non-custodial. The difference is in how they handle the edge cases around key management. Rabby assumes you want to move between wallets. MetaMask assumes you will stay.

The answer depends on your threat model.

MetaMask has a larger user base and more third-party tooling. That does not make it more secure. It makes it a bigger target. More phishing campaigns target MetaMask users. More malicious dApps test against MetaMask first.
